In our previous article we reveal the results of a study we did on several newspapers the spaces dedicated to environmental or ecological issues such as climate change, global warming, endangered species, etc. Our discovery was very discouraging, by famine we find in these “areas”.

The next step we took was to give free rein to our curiosity about the state of affairs, but this time in the field of literature, specifically in the category of novels that focus their frames on these issues. As much as we want, scrutinize, review and find out, hopeful of finding a vein of gold writing that somehow could classify into new genres of fiction, our efforts were in vain. It was very little, almost nothing, what we find in something that could have been classified as ecological novels, fabled ecology, novels about climate catastrophe, eco-tragedy, drama of extinction, environmental novel, intrigue thriller or ecological pollution.

It is really worrying, perhaps rather amazing that most of the authors have been interested in writing about something that concerns us all and that one point could cause unimaginable damage and ends up compromising life on Earth. We know that the primary purpose of the novel is to entertain, and its consequences, among others, encourage the habit of reading, improve reading comprehension, broaden horizons and increase the general culture. But almost completed the first decade of the century, which offers a glimpse of a huge black cloud hanging over humanity, not few doubt it will become the sign of this century, as is the environmental threat, we believe that the novel should transcend their traditional purposes and take on more aggressive roles in terms of alert and warn readers about these issues, of course without sacrificing character of fiction and entertainment, as if she should take off they obviously would not be novel to become in assay.

Authors who choose the subjects that have been quoting would be the pioneers of a new kind of eco-fiction and be advanced to others who would join only when it is too obvious urge to write about the fury of Mother Earth, their vengeance or more While defending the abuse that we have submitted. The time is now, the writers who take on the challenge may be appointed in the future as developed in this field.

With regard to publishers, they should give more importance to catastrophic-ecological theme and encourage authors to write engaged focusing its work in these areas. Thus, alongside literary pages, libraries and institutions of the language and culture could call literary contests or prizes based on the named issues. It would be like to have an unexplored mine virgin materials list and to encourage creative fantasies. The beneficiary would obviously be the reader.
