Desertification and drought are issues that affect the entire planet and consequently the populations of all regions, so their interest is worldwide.

This June 17th is the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. For 2023 the theme is “Her land. Her rights”. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) does so through an important message.

Women are major actors in the global efforts to reduce and reverse land degradation. However, in the vast majority of countries, women have unequal and limited access to and control over land. We cannot achieve land degradation neutrality without gender equality, and we cannot exclude half the population from land management decisions because of their gender.” – Ibrahim Thiaw, UNCCD Executive Secretary

It seeks to focus on the defense of women’s rights, on the lands they inhabit and work. They are considered essential aspects to achieve the global objectives on gender equality and to seek to advance in neutrality in land degradation by 2030, both Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this year 2023 the events will be held in the city of New York, headquarters of the United Nations. It will also be held in different cities around the world.
