FAQs about Water Pollution and Shortage

12. Can we finish drinking water on the planet?

We often read about the shortage of drinking water in various parts of the world and the threat that the problem may become more serious in the future. There are three problems that contribute to worsen the situation: the increase in water pollution, global warming and the increase in population, which will continue to increase the drought and desertification on the planet.

Today, almost two million people die each year due to lack of drinking water. And it is likely that in 15 years half of the world’s population will live in areas where there will not be enough water for everyone. Almost 800 million people do not have access to secure sources. The World Economic Forum and other institutions estimate that by 2030 the demand will be 40% higher than today, and that the planet will not be able to supply. That will affect agriculture, which will increase the shortage of food.
