FAQs about COP28 Dubai UAE 2023
8. What is the Global Stocktake and how does it relate to COP28?
The Global Stocktake is a tool for countries and stakeholders to know where they are collectively making progress towards meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change and where they are not.
The Global Stocktake is carried out every five years, with the first scheduled to conclude this year at COP28 . It is an inventory to examine everything related to the global situation on climate action and support, identify gaps and work together to chart a better path forward to accelerate climate action.
“The Global Stocktake matter of ambition, responsibility and acceleration” declared the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, Simon Stiell. “It is an exercise that aims to ensure that each Party is doing its part as agreed, knows where it needs to go next and how quickly it needs to move to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement”.
“But this is not just a routine check. Stiell calls it a moment to correct course , an opportunity to increase ambition and avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The balance itself is not what changes things, but the global response that is given to it”.
