6. What is expected from COP27?

The twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties, organized by the UN on Climate Change, will be held in the Egyptian city of Sharm el Sheikh, between November 6 and 18. COP27 is expected “it will be the turning point where the world comes together and demonstrates its political will to face the climate challenge through concerted, collaborative and impactful action.”

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has said: “I deeply believe that COP27 is an opportunity to show unity against an existential threat that we can only overcome through concerted action and effective implementation.”

This, more than an opportunity, should be an urgent obligation since climatic calamities are notorious and are on the rise. This year of 2022, catastrophic situations have occurred in almost all parts of the planet, with a balance of deaths, injuries, economic losses, migrations, etc. that show that climate change is advancing, and the planet is no longer waiting.

Mother Earth is losing patience with us humans. We have all seen in the news media how floods, mountain slides, overflowing rivers, heat waves, forest fires, cyclones, hailstorms in deserts and other major calamities have intensified this year.

It is time for serious, achievable steps and urgent action against climate change at COP27 instead of postponing crucial issues for the following year.
