This year, 2025, we celebrate the 55th Anniversary of Earth Day, and the theme “Our Power, Our Planet” has been chosen to develop the April 22nd Earth Day campaign.

Let’s go back in time to the history of this Earth Day celebration. In 1970, April 22nd was established as a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of this beautiful blue sphere for all of us who inhabit it. Therefore, 2025 will mark the 55th anniversary of its creation.

The United Nations owed a great debt to the planet. Given the increasingly visible impact of climate change on it, at its 2009 Assembly, it decided to designate April 22nd as International Mother Earth Day. Therefore, from that year on, we have two titles to honor the Earth.

Given the severity of the climate crisis affecting the planet and seeking to achieve the sustainable development goals for 2030, 2025 has been dedicated to focusing on renewable energy and the energy transition.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) presented its 2024 report, highlighting the increase in global renewable energy capacity, a record annual growth rate of 15.1%, and significant progress in solar and wind energy. It shows the participation of countries in the energy transition, with China having the greatest share and Central American and Caribbean countries lagging the furthest behind.

The United Nations calls for taking care of Mother Earth by combating climate change, changes caused by man in nature, crimes against biodiversity, deforestation, changes in land use, intensive agricultural and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, accelerating the pace of destruction of the planet. It calls for the preservation of Earth’s ecosystems, the basis of all life forms on it.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) calls for strengthening international cooperation in higher education for sustainability.

At SGK-PLANET, we are convinced that education is the basis for the development of society, which is why we promote the dissemination of issues related to the planet and its sustainability.

We invite everyone to take care of our planet, with actions, no matter how small, each person contributing according to their possibilities. Here are our suggestions.

  • Reduce plastic pollution by eliminating single-use plastics and collecting plastic waste from our environment.
  • Plant a small tree or plant, contributing to reforestation and avoiding drought and soil erosion.
  • Be kind and preserve your environment, reduce annoying noises, and prevent forest fires.
  • Preserve water, the basic element of life on the planet. Use this vital liquid wisely.
  • Apply the 3 Rs: reduce waste, reuse what you already have, and recycle existing resources and products.
