10. Can airplanes fly on Green Hydrogen?

On September 21, 2020, the European company Airbus (external link) the European aircraft manufacturer, has revealed “three concepts for the world’s first zero-emission commercial aircraft that could enter service in 2035. Each of these concepts represents a different approach to achieve zero emissions flight, exploring various technological pathways and aerodynamic configurations in order to support the company’s ambition to lead the way in decarbonizing the entire aviation industry.”

All these concepts are based on green hydrogen as a primary source of energy, an option that Airbus considers “promising and exceptional as a clean aviation fuel and is likely to be a solution for the aerospace industry and many other industries to meet their climate neutral objectives”.
