On the occasion of the celebration of World Water Day and 2025 being the “International Year for the Preservation of Glaciers”, the United Nations Assembly (UN) agreed to designate March 21 as World Glacier Day starting in 2025.
The United Nations sets the objective for celebrating World Glacier Day:
Raise global awareness of the critical connections between the cryosphere, climate change, the water cycle, the economy, the environment, and society.
World Water Day 2025 presents us with three key messages:
- Glaciers are melting faster than ever.
- The retreat of glaciers threatens to devastate the planet.
- Glacier preservation is a survival strategy.
On March 22, 2025, UN-Water presented its important annual report on the development of water resources, water, and sanitation around the world. In line with the 2025 theme, the report is titled the United Nations World Water Development Report 2025. Mountains and glaciers. Water towers.
In this edition, the water report focuses on “the essential services and benefits that mountain waters and alpine glaciers provide for societies, economies, and the environment.”
UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are the United Nations agencies organizing the celebration. The message to be conveyed focuses on “Implementing sustainable management practices and fostering international scientific cooperation… to preserve these critical water sources, ensure long-term prosperity, and promote world peace.”
