12. What are COPs and what are their objectives?
The COP, a Conference of the Parties that has a long history, is the supreme body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), created in May 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro , with the premise of strengthening public awareness worldwide on issues related to Climate Change. Among the main objectives of the COP is the stabilization of the concentrations of Greenhouse Gases in the atmosphere to prevent risks in the climate system. The first meeting of the COP was held in 1995, in Bonn, Germany.
