The Paris Agreement: The climate promise we are forgetting
The Paris Agreement on climate change. Let us recall its goal: to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C to manage the planet’s climate change.
Climate change and the importance of understanding what we face
Addressing climate challenges in the not-too-distant future must be viewed as a crucial, high-priority issue. Integrating these topics into educational curricula is becoming increasingly urgent.
It would be valuable to survey secondary and university students to gauge their understanding of key concepts related to the Paris Agreement, the COP (the annual United Nations climate change conferences), and related topics.
A lack of awareness regarding the Paris Agreement
Such studies would let us assess current climate awareness, regionally or globally, depending on the groups surveyed. We would gain a clearer picture of what today’s youth know about one of the most critical issues of our time: climate change and its impact on life on our planet.
Ultimately, today’s young people will be the most affected in the future, given their inherent vulnerability. Navigating this environmental reality, no longer distant, will become increasingly complex. If we don’t address this lack of environmental knowledge today, it may be too late tomorrow.
Information as a tool in the face of the climate crisis
Survey results may be alarming, revealing how many young people are unaware of the Paris Agreement, the broader fight against climate change, or the purpose of the COP climate conferences. Many are also unfamiliar with the significance of the nearly 180 countries that have joined the Agreement, or the commitments these nations have made to meet the 1.5°C target.
Many students, and even some teachers, are unaware of the causes and consequences of climate-related issues. In fact, the general public knows little to nothing about these topics, with only a few exceptions. Yet climate phenomena are making global headlines because of their devastating impact across the planet.
Why this matters to us at SGK-PLANET
Our website is dedicated to Mother Earth. We launched it alongside the 2015 Paris Agreement, driven by our editors’ commitment to sharing information on environmental and related issues. Over the past eleven years, we have remained steadfast in that initial commitment. With more than a thousand pages, sgkplanet.com aims to raise awareness and foster a sustainable planet.
At SGK-PLANET, we are launching a survey and inviting all young people to participate. The survey includes questions about climate change and the importance of the Paris Agreement. Once the consultation concludes, we will process the data and make the results available to everyone who visits our website.
We hope that the study’s findings will translate into concrete actions that help achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. For the UN, these figures could provide valuable insights to support the development of youth-oriented programs and help raise awareness about the importance of caring for our planet.
