FAQs about the COP, Conference of the Parties
4. Why are COPs held every year?
Between the Stockholm Conference-1972, the First Earth Summit, and the Rio Summit-1992, the Second Earth Summit, 20 years passed, too long a time to make decisions. In view of the rapid advance of global warming and climate change, it was thought that an annual climate conference should be held to advance more effectively in the fight against climate change. From this premise was born the creation of the COP and the meetings once a year.
COP conferences are held every year, starting in 1995. The COP is made up of 196 countries plus the European Union, called “the Parties”. Since its creation, no COP had been postponed until COP26 had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year (2022) is COP27, to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, between November 7 and 18, 2022.
