4. What was the importance of COP21?
The COP21, or twenty-first Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, was held in Paris, France between 30 November and 11 December. This summit was of immense importance because of it came out the Paris Agreement, an ambitious global agreement to fight against climate change. It was adopted by 197 countries and its signature was officially launched on April 22, 2016, Earth Day. Its implementation will start in 2020. The Paris Agreement provides for the limitation of global temperature increase to 2°C by reducing Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions caused by fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, which burn release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (CO2).
