1. What is coal?

Coal is a rock that in addition to coal contains hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen in amounts that can vary from one sample to another. The mineral coal originated mainly in the Carboniferous period, from vegetables deposited in marshes and lagoons, which date from 300 to 360 million years ago. Coal is a fossil fuel that, when burned, causes greenhouse gases and therefore contributes to global warming and climate change.

At present, coal is used mainly in thermoelectric plants to generate electricity, in the steel industry and in concrete factories. Fortunately, there is a movement supported by 70 countries, regions and companies willing to abandon coal. However, still many countries are reluctant to change to sustainable energy patterns and cling to traditional energies.
