4. What is the Environmental Conservation Monitoring Center?

The World Conservation Monitoring Center is a branch of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Among its activities is the evaluation of biological diversity, support for international conventions such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in addition, “facilitate the application of global indicators corresponding to the 2010 Objective for Biodiversity on the rate of loss of biological diversity, an–d together with the CITES Secretariat produces a series of reports and databases. It also manages, in collaboration with the World Commission on Protected Areas (…), the world database on protected areas. Through the University of California (…) it has published a series of world atlases on topics related to biological diversity (…) and multiple programs for different spheres of conservation: bioinformatics, trade, and biological diversity; climate change; ecosystem assessment; food security, biomass, and biological diversity; decisions and support in maritime matters; protected areas; and species.”, according to information taken from Wikipedia.

June 5 was established as World Environment Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. On that date, the Stockholm Conference “First Earth Summit” was held at the initiative of Sweden and in conjunction with the UN.

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 of each year. In 2020 the venue of the event was Colombia. Topics to be discussed was the Amazon, air quality, health, circular economy, and climate change.
