Forests and sustainable production and consumption

The theme of the International Day of Forests 2022 “Forests and sustainable production and consumption”, has been chosen to draw attention to this problem and to consciously promote the use of sustainable wood for people and the planet.

Forests are one of the main means of absorbing CO2, fundamental in the fight against climate change, thereby benefiting the life of this generation and mainly of future generations. However, deforestation continues at an accelerated rate, hampering the ecological, economic and social benefits that forests provide us, postponing the eradication of poverty and the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG15 Life on Land and SDG12 Sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Regarding the promotion of sustainable consumption and production of wood, it is based on the fact that, being a renewable natural resource, its production must be under the sustainable management of forests, in an environmentally friendly way. This would benefit the planet, its inhabitants, and three quarters of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity would be preserved.

Sustainable and recycled woods allow us to build homes, countless pieces of furniture and utensils, replace polluting materials such as plastic, and develop fibers for clothing. Technology also takes her to areas such as medicine or the space race.

Forests are fundamental in the preservation of water, an essential element for life on the planet, just as they keep our air clean from pollution, they do so by preserving clean water, allowing it to be made drinkable for the consumption of the population, so in need of this resource and so scarce or non-existent in some regions.
