Infographics COP27 Sharm El-Sheikh 2022

From November 6 to 18, 2022, the COP27, Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, will be held in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh. On this occasion, Egypt is chairing the COP, under the presidency of Dr. Sameh Shoukry, who is part of the Cabinet of the Arab Republic of Egypt as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, designated Mr. Simon Stiell as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on August 15, 2022.  The designation was made after consultation with the Conference of the Parties through the Bureau. Mr. Simon Stiell is a native of the island of Grenada and served as a senior minister in the Government of Grenada holding the portfolio of Minister of Climate Resilience and Environment for the past five years.

In 2022, the African continent will host the summit of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change, COP27. The city of Sharm El-Sheikh, in Egypt, has been appointed as the venue for the event to host the member countries of the convention from November 6 to 18.

The Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center (SHICC). Egypt

The Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center (SHICC) in Egypt is one of the largest and most innovative conference centers in the Middle East and Africa. Its strategic location allows the SHICC to be reached in a matter of minutes, both from Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport and from different areas of the city. It has state-of-the-art facilities equipped with multiple technical and logistical services.

COP26 Blue Zone

Space destined to the realization of the Climate Summit and administered directly by the United Nations. Conferences and negotiations are held here between member countries attending the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27). Only organizations, agencies, media and non-profit observer organizations accredited for the Convention participate. In this area there are also the Special Pavilions and the Parallel Events areas of the official agenda.

COP26 Green Zone

The Green Zone is a space at COP27 so that they can express themselves in an interactive, participatory and inclusive way in everything related to climate action. The daily activities are related to the issues addressed in the COP27 Blue Zone, with the intention of connecting the issues in the two spaces. From November 6 to 18, the Green Zone of COP27 will be open to the public.

COP27 Presidency Climate Action Calendar

In addition to its main responsibilities related to the meetings of the COP, CMP and CMA and supporting Parties in advancing their agreed agendas through consensus, the Egyptian Presidency is keen to ensure that COP sessions provide a space for serious interaction and engagement with all stakeholders with a view to integrating their views and contributions into the overall global effort to combat climate change.

With this in mind, the incoming Egyptian COP27 Presidency has identified a range of topics focused on enhancing implementation and raising ambition on broad range of issues related to climate change. Egypt has further designated several thematic days for focused discussions, including through side events, panel discussions, round tables and other interactive formats to deliberate on and share with the wider audience.
