7. What is a COP and what are its objectives?
The COP, Conference of the Parties, is the supreme organ of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), created in May 1992, at the “Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro”, with the premise to reinforce public awareness on a global scale about the problems related to Climate Change. Among the main objectives of the COP stands out the stabilization of the concentrations of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere to prevent risks in the climate system. The first meeting of the COP was held in 1995, in Bonn, Germany.
