Why is World Population Day celebrated on July 11?

The UN established this date because that day, in 1987, the world population reached 5,000 million people. Since then this figure has increased by more than 50%, surpassing the 7,600 million inhabitants.

The numerical growth of humans in the 20th century was explosive. In 1900 the population was 1,600 million; in 1960, 3,000 million and in 2000, 6,000 million human beings.

What is the theme chosen for 2019?

This year’s World Population Day explores into some outstanding issues since 1994, the year in which the International Conference on Population and Development was held under the auspices of the United Nations. In the city of Cairo, Egypt, more than 180 States met, which approved a new Action Program as a guide for national and international action in the area of population and development for the next 20 years. “This new Program of Action emphasizes the integral relationship between population and development and focuses on responding to the needs of individuals – within the framework of universally recognized human rights standards – rather than achieving just demographic goals.
